Citroën has enhanced the all-electric powertrain of the Citroen e-C4 and X model, introducing a new battery and engine combination that promises a range of up to 260 miles between charges. This marks a 17% improvement over the previous 50kWh battery option, thanks to a new 154PS electric motor and a larger 54kWh battery. Notably, the new battery maintains the same physical dimensions as the old unit but boasts greater energy density. This upgraded powertrain is exclusively available on the new range-topping e-Series trim level.
The improved e-C4 supports rapid charging up to 100kW, allowing an 80% charge in about 30 minutes. A full charge using a 7kW Wallbox charger takes just over seven hours. Despite these advancements, real-world testing over the past three months reveals some discrepancies. Unlike other EV’s that adjust their range display based on driving style, the e-C4 maintains a static range figure, which can be misleading. Currently, the e-C4 averages 3.2 miles per kWh, suggesting an actual range closer to 200 miles, rather than the claimed 260 miles.
The Citroën e-C4, a family-friendly five-door hatchback stacks up well against similarly trimmed and battery-sized ID3 and MG4 models. The 58kWh ID3, with its more powerful 204PS motor, is currently priced at around £37,860. Meanwhile, the MG4, equipped with a larger 64kWh battery and 204PS motor, is currently around £4,000 cheaper.
The all-electric Citroën e-C4 has been bolstered by a higher-powered, longer-range variant. With the latest 54kWh battery technology and a 115kW electric motor, the new e-C4 can achieve up to 260 miles on a single charge (WLTP). It supports up to 100kW rapid charging, enabling 80% of the battery to be charged in 30 minutes. For home charging, a Type 2 cable is provided, allowing a full charge in seven hours and 30 minutes with a standard 7.4kW charger.
Initial impressions of the e-C4 have been positive. Citroën continues to deliver distinctive design elements, giving the e-C4 considerable curb appeal. There are three e-C4 models available: Sense, E-Series, and C-Series Edition, with the 54kWh and 154bhp motor only available on the latter. All models come equipped with LED headlights, a 10.0-inch touchscreen, Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist, and Driver Attention Alert. The e-C4’s interior feels fresh and modern, with a simple digital dashboard and a responsive infotainment system, though many functions require extensive use of the touchscreen.
On the road, the e-C4 offers a smooth driving experience, though it lacks the rapid acceleration found in many EV’s. It reaches cruising speed quickly enough, achieving 0-62mph in 9.2 seconds (10 seconds for the 50kWh model) with a maximum speed of 93mph for both variants. As the long-term test continues, it will be interesting to see how the e-C4 performs in various real-world conditions.
