For the first time, the BMW 5 Series Saloon is available with an all-electric powertrain, embodied in the i5. The BMW i5 eDrive40 model stands out for its refinement, comfort, and cutting-edge technology.
The i5 eDrive40 elevates the refinement typical of electric cars. It offers a quiet, comfortable ride, even with large alloy wheels and low-profile tyres, making it ideal for long motorway journeys. The rear-wheel drive chassis and low centre of gravity provide a rewarding driving experience, though its 2.2-tonne weight makes it less agile than smaller models like the BMW i4.
Performance-wise, the i5 accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.0 seconds. For those seeking more power, the BMW i5 M60 xDrive offers 601 hp and a 0-62 mph time of 3.8 seconds. The car also features various “My Modes” such as Personal, Sport, Efficient, Relax, Expressive, and Digital Art, which alter not only driving settings but also the interior ambiance and sound effects.
The i5 is equipped with a small gear selector and offers a choice of driving modes that enhance brake regeneration, though it lacks the option to adjust this via steering wheel paddles. Instead, a left-side paddle provides a boost in acceleration.
BMW’s advanced infotainment system is accessed via a 14.9-inch central touchscreen, while a 12.3-inch information display behind the steering wheel and an optional head-up display provide additional driving information. This setup enhances safety by minimising the need to look away from the road.
The BMW i5 eDrive40 boasts an official WLTP combined electric driving range of 312-356 miles, depending on wheel size, with a real-world range estimated between 260-300 miles. It supports ultra-rapid charging at a maximum rate of 205 kW, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes. The car can also AC charge up to 11 kW as standard, with an optional upgrade to 22 kW.A standard heat pump helps minimise battery capacity loss in cold weather, and the i5 optimises charging efficiency by reducing power in a curve rather than in steps.
The BMW i5 eDrive40 introduces all-electric power to the 5 Series Saloon, delivering exceptional refinement and comfort. While its agility is somewhat limited by its weight, the i5 maintains BMW’s signature rear-wheel drive handling. With an acceleration time of 6.0 seconds and a WLTP range of 312-356 miles, it offers robust performance and efficiency. The ultra-rapid charging capability further enhances its practicality. Although the i5’s high price reflects its premium features, it stands out as a polished, all-round electric vehicle in the luxury sedan market.
