Electric vehicle owners in the UK have been warned to perform daily tyre checks throughout the autumn and winter months to avoid hefty fines. With colder weather approaching, under-inflated or worn tyres pose significant safety risks and can lead to financial penalties of up to £10,000. Motorists could face fines of £2,500 per tyre, along with three penalty points, if their vehicle’s tyres fail to meet legal requirements.
Due to the heavier weight of EV’s compared to conventional vehicles, maintaining correct tyre pressure is crucial for efficiency and safety. Under-inflated tyres can reduce an EV’s efficiency by increasing rolling resistance, which impacts battery performance and reduces range. Experts recommend checking tyre pressure regularly, as well as examining the tread depth, to ensure optimal driving conditions.
The minimum legal tread depth for tyres is 1.6mm, regardless of whether the vehicle is electric or petrol-powered. This depth ensures sufficient grip, particularly in wet weather, helping to prevent accidents. EV-specific tyres tread depth may be lower when new, designed to improve rolling resistance while maintaining performance.
To stay within legal limits and avoid fines, EV drivers are encouraged to check their tyre tread regularly using a tread depth gauge or the 20p coin test. Vehicle manufacturers also provide recommended tyre pressures, usually indicated in the owner’s manual or inside the driver’s door. Keeping tyres inflated to the correct pressure not only extends tyre life but also enhances vehicle efficiency and safety, particularly during the challenging winter months.
